In 1904, the City was renamed the City of Garber and was incorporated. Today, Garber has fewer than 100 residents. Garbers original incorporation documents included only the borders of the incorporated area. There is no record of a platted Fifth Street since the 1873 plat. In 1959, a family purchased property at 501 Fifth Street, which was thought to include Fifth Street itself. This was the only property located on Fifth Street.

Diacetyl is used to flavor buttered popcorn, and even though the Food and Drug Administration has deemed it to be safe, research indicates that it is not. According to George Washington Universitys School of Public Health, numerous research has established that there is an association between on the job exposure to diacetyl and lung disease. A 2006 report published in Toxicological Reviews explored the connection between diacetyl and lung disease. Based on the authors of the report, theres a dose response relationship between exposure to diacetyl and also the incidence of both bronchitis and airflow obstruction. The authors also noted that animal research has established that diacetyl on its own can cause inflammation of the airway.

The UWI has also initiated a new partnership with South Africas University of Johannesburg that will establish a new Institute for Global Africa Affairs; and in collaboration with the University of Lagos we will be establishing the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies. These initiatives indicate the expanding and evolving nature of our programming, the international focus of our institutions, and illustrate the dynamic research currently being undertaken at the Mona Campus. It is our belief that by highlighting a more regional, and indeed global, focus in our programming and research initiatives we will be able to drive greater interest from students from across the Caribbean and internationally to consider The UWI as their future in education. These changes illustrate that The UWI is indeed an institution with an expansive and diverse global focus. In addition to including a more diverse selection of new academic programmes for the 2017 2018 academic year we have also engaged in some very integral research projects that are aimed at improving the welfare and way of life for the Jamaican society. These research projects have also provided our students with the opportunities to engage in unique and innovative research endeavours.
